This knowledge will help students to choose the university or college that is best for them. It will also contribute to the modernisation and quality of higher education by enabling universities to identify their strengths or weaknesses and learn from each other's experience."

In the spotlight New international university ranking launched in Dublin A new university ranking, set up with funding from the European Union, has been publicly launched under the Irish EU Presidency in Dublin. The new 'multi-dimensional' listing marks a departure from traditional approaches to ranking university performance, most of which focus disproportionately on research excellence. Instead, it will rate universities according to a broader range of factors, in five separate areas: reputation for research, quality of teaching and learning, international orientation, success in knowledge transfer (such as partnerships with business and start-ups), and contribution to regional growth. Some 500 universities from Europe and across the world are expected to sign up to take part in the ranking and the first results will be published in early 2014.

What the European Council agreement means for EU education, youth and culture programmes On 8 February, the heads of state and government of all the EU member states (European Council) reached an agreement on the EU's long-term budget. The agreement means that the overall EU budget, for the first time ever, will decrease.

Young migrants access better professional careers through vocational training The number of young people not in education, employment or training is frightening (14 million Europeans aged 15-29). Young migrants in particular face increased risks of such a fate. This is where Vocational Training (VET) can play a significant role for youngsters' professional career prospects, offering them practical training and a diploma at the end of their studies, together with increased possibilities of getting a job before finishing school.

Commission blows the whistle over inflated football transfer fees Football clubs spend around €3 billion a year on player transfers, but very little of this money trickles down to smaller clubs or the amateur game, according to a European Commission study that has been recently published.

Youth unemployment and skills focus for Education Council The fight against youth unemployment, currently nearly 24 % in the European Union, was at the forefront of discussion at the Council for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport which took place in Brussels on 15 February. Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, underlined the importance of modernising education and training systems to ensure young people are equipped with skills needed by the job market.
